The Woes of the Ellijay Post Office

t will come as no surprise to most folks in Ellijay that postal service has been struggling to keep up with
the volume of mail over the last few months. You may have experienced delays or cancellations on items
sent via the US Postal Service in recent months, and we know how frustrating that is. Some of these
delays stem from problems at a new distribution plant in Palmetto, Georgia, that has been having a
negative effect on service around the whole southeast. Our own local branch of the post office has also
been struggling to keep fully staffed since the covid 19 pandemic hit in 2020, as most employers have
been hesitant to pay what workers now expect to make due to the rising cost of living.

Cooling Assistance Program Application Information

Hotter temperatures and higher energy prices will make keeping cool this summer more difficult than
ever. Luckily, the Georgia Division of Family & Child Services will be accepting applications to the
federally-funded Low Income Cooling Assistance Program starting April 1st for elderly and home-bound
individuals. Folks over the age of 65 and/or medically confined to the home will have a month long head
start to apply for this program before applications open up to the general public on May 1st.

New Program Changes for NETV

We will no longer be doing the New Ellijay News as a weekly program, and instead we will be bringing
you a monthly local event show called What’s Goin’ On, Ellijay? Hosted by Wheel Dover. This program
will take an in depth look at the community events happening in Ellijay over the next 6 weeks and will be
coming out the second or third week of every month. We plan to develop a visitor-oriented streaming
channel on the NETV Roku app that will run this broadcast hourly, along with weather and other local
spotlight content and advertisements.

The State of Medicaid in Georgia

As we’ve been discussing on New Ellijay News over the past few months, the State of Georgia has been removing tens of thousands of people from its Medicaid rolls since the Federal government declared an end to the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency earlier this year. With that in mind, we’re going to take a deeper dive into Medicaid to raise awareness of how the program works, its eligibility requirements, and how to keep you and your family covered.
